What is Osteoporosis?

Loss of bone volume and mineral content—spaces and canals form and fill with fibrous and fatty tissue

-white women’s risk is 1 in 6 for broken hip—this increases after menopause

-men have ½ the risk of women

-risk factors for Osteoporosis:

            Low Ca intake                        genetics

*Lack of exercise during early growing years

            Drinking          smoking           caffeine intake

-decreased levels of estrogen increase the risk—i.e. no ovaries (from menopause or hysterectomy) and anorexia=no period=decreased estrogen

-bone mass peaks when you are 35 years old

-recommended calcium intake: Mid-20’s and up = 1,000-1,5000mg Ca/day + exercise daily
